The International All Wooden Bicycle Speed Record Association (IAWBSRA).
Rules are in place to promote fair and even competition in speed record attempts by riders of all wooden bicycles. The Association retains the role of decision making on all and any claims to land speed records attempted by all wooden bicycles. The decisions of the IAWBSRA are final without recourse to any appeal.
There are ten main rules to be followed:
A bicycle is a two wheeled vehicle with the front wheel steerable and the front or rear wheel ‘driven’. The bicycle shall be controlled by the rider facing the direction of travel and using a steering system on the front wheel. The rider shall apply power through to either the front or the rear wheel with their feet. There shall be a saddle upon which the rider may sit. The saddle shall be higher than the point at which the feet apply power. The IAWBSRA encourages innovation in design and the bicycle can be a ‘one off’ and there is no minimum weight.
2.0 The Construction Material
The only material of construction allowed must start from natural wood, without any preparation other than drying to lower moisture content. Laminates, such as plywood are permitted. The use of jointing adhesive (glue) from commercially available sources to hold parts together is approved. Decorative paint coating can be applied to the wood surfaces to give a colour change or to provide weather protection. Any coating which is believed to provide additional strength to the machine will result in disqualification. The bicycle shall finish the attempt in the same condition as it started the attempt, including the required back-up pass on a long straight course and no parts can be discarded once in motion. Any unsafe vehicle shall be disqualified from making an attempt.
3.0 The Power
Power can only be supplied by the solo human rider of the bicycle once underway on the course. There is no distinction as to gender of the rider. Riders attempting records can be of any age provided they can demonstrate full and safe control of their machine.
4.0 The Course
The location for the record attempt shall be in the open air. The course can be of unlimited total length if an open course or it can be a closed course using a velodrome meeting international construction details. The open course shall be level (flat) throughout its total usable length with no element exceeding a gradient of 1 in 150 certified by a qualified surveyor. The open course need not be straight. The elevation of the course above sea level will determine the category of the attempt. Below 700 metres is a ‘low level’ course. Above 700 metres is a ‘high level’ course. Each elevation will have its own record. The faster recorded speed will be the outright world land speed record of any all wooden bicycle. The speed of the rider and bicycle will be recorded over a straight timed section of the long open course with a distance of at least 200m accurately measured by a qualified surveyor to 1 in 10,000. A shorter timed distance of 50m is permitted when a two way run is completed within 20 minutes. On a velodrome track either two 50 metre distances opposite each or a full lap can be timed. The timing trap(s) will be approached by a ‘flying start’.
5.0 The Timing
Electronic timing activated only by the passage of the rider and bicycle will be used to measure the elapsed time of the passage through the timed section, to an accuracy of not less than 1/1,000 second. Timing equipment shall be certified by a national laboratory for verification of accuracy. The time recorded shall be used to calculate the speed of the attempt to an accuracy of 1/1,000 of mph or kph. A timekeeper shall calculate the speed achieved using the average of times taken for two way passes. [1 mile = 1.609344 km; 1 km = 0.62137 mile].
6.0 The conditions of an attempt.
A maximum wind speed measured by the officials along the direction of a long open course with 200m timed distance at 1.5m above the surface level shall not exceed 1.66 m/s (6 kph) during the complete timed run. A run will be disallowed if the wind velocity exceeds the maximum figure at any time during the period from the riders start to the exit of the timing trap. No maximum wind speed exists for the shorter two-way timed course or for a closed course (velodrome), provided the rider is timed on opposite sides of the track or completes a full lap.
7.0 The back-up pass
A back-up pass or ‘return run’ is required to make a record official on a long open course. The rider and bicycle shall traverse the same measured distance on the same course within 5% of the time taken for which the record speed is being claimed. The back-up pass can be in either direction of travel. To allow recovery for the rider, the back-up pass can be made at any time 200 hours before or after the time of day recorded for the record speed. With the shorter timed distance the back-up pass has to be completed within 20 minutes. On a closed course (velodrome) with the timing taking place on opposite sides of the track no back up pass will be needed
8.0 Permitted assistance
To assist a rider to move from a standstill, two team members can provide manual support and aid the rider to move forward whilst operating within an observed 15m long length of the course on the approach to the timed distance.
9.0 The Officials
The team making the bid shall engage the services of two independent observers who must be fully acquainted with the rules and procedures of the IAWBSRA. The judges shall be impartial and have no connection with the ownership, design or operation of the record attempt bicycle. The observers are “judges of fact” whose decisions are final on all matters during the attempt. One of the observers shall report in writing to the IAWBSRA on all matters surrounding the attempt.
10.0 The safety requirements
The rider shall wear an approved helmet which has been certified by a national safety authority for competition cycling use. The rider shall wear clothing so as to remain decent during the record attempt. The rider is encouraged to wear suitable clothing to give protection should they fall from the machine. The rider shall indemnify the IAWBSRA to the fact that they are fit and well to undertake the speed record attempt and the back-up pass.
